The presence of salt in water or soil is one of the most crucial abiotic stresses for the crop growth and the loss of productivity in worldwide. Two newly discovered natural plant biostimulants named mimics of zaxinone (MZ3 and MZ5) and a commercial humic acid (HA) were able to improve crop tolerance to abiotic stresses, such as salinity. The present research aimed to investigate effects of the application of biostimulants MZ3, MZ5, and HA on the growth, yield and quality of bell pepper grown in open field under different salinity levels. Pepper plants were supplied with three levels of saline irrigation water of EC 3.51, 8.04, and 11.71 dS m-1. Plants were sprayed every week with two doses; MZ3 and MZ5 were carried out at 5 and 10 μM/l whereas HA was 1 and 1.5 g/l of water. Plant growth and yield traits decreased with high salinity level than lower one. A positive effect was found of plant biostimulants application on growth and yield parameters compare to control. Biostimulats applications especially zaxinone led to significantly higher growth parameters, number of fruits, fruit dimension, and total yield as well as quality of fruit than for HA and control. The result showed that MZ5 biostimulant at 10 μM/l had best effect on single fruit weight (150.6 g), fruit yield/plant (314.34 g), fruit yield/plot (24.73 kg) and total yield/ha (49.06 ton) under lower (3.51 dS m-1) salinity whereas medium (8.04 dSm-1) salinity was observed 127.53 g, 1639.41g, 19.69 kg, and 39.07 ton, respectively. Finally, plant biostimulants improved growth and yield as well as quality under lower and medium salinity levels in open arid land conditions compared with non-treated pepper plants. Thus, the application of plant biostimulants reduced the usage and dependency on chemical fertilizers as well as keep the environment into friendly and safe. |
