This study aimed to identify the relationship between the use of social media and mindfulness among a sample of adolescents in Jeddah, the level of using the social media and the level of mindfulness of the sample individuals, determine the differences between the sample individuals concerning the degree of using the social media and mindfulness according to the difference of both variants of (gender and age). To achieve the objectives of the study, the scale of using the social media has been developed by the researcher, to measure the use of social media, in addition to translating the Adolescent and Adult Mindfulness Scale (AAMS), which was developed by Droutman, Golub, Oganesyan, and Read (2018). The instruments were administered to a sample consisting of 720 male and female students aging between 12 and 21 years old, who were randomly selected form various educational levels (i.e. middle school, high school, and university level) in Jeddah. The analysis of data revealed the following important results:
there was a negative statistically significant relationship between the use of social media and mindfulness at a total degree as well as for the following sub-dimensions: non-reactivity, non-judgmental, and acceptance. On the other hand, a positive statistically significant relationship was found between the use of social media and the first dimension of mindfulness (i.e. attention and awareness). Furthermore, the results revealed that there were no statistically significant differences between males and females in the degree of the use of social media, and there were no statistically significant differences between the participants in the use of social media according to their different ages as well.
However, statistically significant differences were observed between males and females in the level of mindfulness and some of its dimensions. These differences were in favor of female participants for the total degree and the dimension of attention and awareness, whereas the differences were in favor of male participants for the dimensions of non-judgmental, and acceptance, while there were no statistically significant differences between males and females for the dimension of non-reactivity. There were also statistically significant differences between the participants in terms of the level of mindfulness to the different age groups, and these differences were in favor of the older age group of participants (from 18 to 21 years).
In light of the results reached, the researcher put forth the following recommendations:
● Developing educational programs targeting male and female adolescents in order to educate them about social media, demonstrating their impact on the mental and psychological health of adolescents, and increase their awareness to use social media in a healthy manner that takes advantage of these media outlets and avoid their negative effects.
● Educating student counselors in schools and universities about the concept of mindfulness and its benefits, and training them on its practices, such as practicing meditation, in order for them to do their duties in educating adolescents and using mindfulness practices to overcome the problems of this age.
