:
Energy drinks (EDs) are carbonated beverages that contain high concentrations of metabolic stimulants. These drinks were advertised to boost alertness, endurance and energy; therefore, their consumption has increased dramatically over the past years. More research is needed to determine the potential for adverse health effects related to the increasing consumption of energy drinks on liver and lipid metabolism. This study aims to evaluate the negative effects of consumption of two types of energy drinks (Red bull and code red) at the two levels of doses on lipid metabolism and liver functions. Fourty male adult albino rats weighing 80-100 g were randomly assigned to five groups (8 rats per group) and each group was orally administered with a type of the energy drinks daily for 4 weeks. Group 1 (control group), Group 2 received Red Bull (5 ml/day ), Group 3 received Code Red (5 ml/day), Group 4 received Red Bull (10 ml/day) and Group 5 received Code Red (10 ml/day ). At the end of the 28th day of experiment, blood samples were collected for biochemical measurements. Data revealed that energy drinks affected the liver enzymes activities (ALT, AST, and ALP). Higher ALT was recorded in experimental rats in general in comparison to the control, with significantly higher levels of ALP and AST observed in experimental rats administered both lower and higher doses of energy drinks (Red Bull and Code Red). Also serum total proteins and albumin were highly significantly (P ≤ 0.05) affected at higher doses of both energy drinks than in lower doses groups, while lower level of total and direct bilirubin was observed in experimental rats administered higher doses of both energy drinks. Moreover, the present study showed significant lower levels of total lipids, total cholesterol, triacylglycerols and LDL-cholesterol in experimental rats administered lower or higher doses of Red Bull or Code Red (5 ml/day or 10 ml/day respectively), while higher HDL-cholesterol levels was recorded in experimental rats when administered higher doses of Code Red in comparison to the control. The values of serum FAS and ACC were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher in rats administered high doses of both energy drinks than those observed in rats administered low doses of both energy drinks. In addition, the values of serum glucose and insulin were significantly (P ≤ 0.05 ) higher in rats administered high doses of both energy drinks compared to low doses he same drinks. The data showed that high doses of Red Bull and Code Red were clearly effective in their effect on liver enzymes, fat metabolism and insulin and glucose, although some changes appeared in these parameters could be attributed to different mixtures of energy drink components.
