Abstract
:
This study deals with the spelling and punctuation mistakes in the two Twitter accounts of the Ministry of Education between 2015 and 2018, based on the descriptive method. The study aimed to identity those mistakes in the two Twitter accounts of the Ministry of Education, to understand why they occurred, and to suggest possible solutions for dealing with them. The study concluded that the percentage of spelling mistakes in relation to the total number of spelling rules that the study covers increased by 12.2% in the account for higher education and 6.8% in the account for general education. Likewise, the study found an increase in the number of mistakes when using hamzat al-waṣl and hamzat al-qaṭʿ compared to all other hamzahs. More mistakes were made in punctuation than any other mistake that was observed in this study. By examining the mistakes, it became clear that the reasons behind them include quick writing and a lack of concentration of the part of the writer as well as negligence in applying some of the ruler of spelling and punctuation. Furthermore, there is no one to scrutinize what has been written and then correct any mistakes that are found. The study then suggests that this problem be dealt with by appointing a linguistic reviser who has a command of the Arabic language, so that he can be shown what is being written. The study also advises that there be greater awareness about the importance of the Arabic language and the extent to which spelling and punctuation mistakes affect how the intended meaning is understood and conveyed to others. This can be done by way of the media as well as through universities, public schools, and social media platforms. Likewise, it recommends that there be more applied studies regarding social media.
