Abstract |

Airline companies are usually facing high flight deck crew (FDC) costs. Usually they go through three different stages just to determine the FDC number. First is the network and scheduling which translates customer demand into flying hours. Second, the manpower planning which convert flying hours in terms of FDC number. The third is the crew scheduling, which is pairing, assignment, and recovery from irregular operations. This research is focus on helping the manpower planning department in SAUDIA Airlines to see if there is a new method of determining the optimum FDC number with minimum possible cost. One of HR functions is Strategic Workforce Planning or SWP. In other words, the succession planning. SWP is focusing on two types of positions, the first one is the critical, and the second one is the pivotal. Since FDC positions (Captains and First Officers) are very critical, they are the most important positions in any aviation -airline- company. Three new theories have been developed. The results and findings showed that comparing the current state with the results of using the manpower planning department method (the old method), B&R method, Simplicity method, and the Couple method showed that B&R method and the Simplicity method both gave better results than the old method. The Simplicity method gave the lowest possible cost with savings around 75 Million SAR annually in total for all types of aircrafts 777, 787, 330 and 320, and with optimum no. of flight deck crew. |
