Abstract
:
Background: A review of the literature revealed that much research has been carried out internationally about caregiving stress and its impact on health in family caregivers of patients with chronic diseases, very little of this research has involved family caregivers in Saudi Arabia, particular family caregivers of adult patients with cancer. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between caregiving stress, mental health and physical health among family caregivers of adult patients with cancer at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Methods: A descriptive, correlational cross-sectional design was used in this study. The study included a convenience sample of 160 family caregivers at a university-teaching hospital in Jeddah city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A survey instrument, Modified Caregiver Strain Index (MCSI) and DUKE Health Profile Questionnaire, including demographic items was completed by participants. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: Participants experienced a certain level of caregiving stress. Many factors were found to be responsible for the high caregiving stress in the study. Caregiving stress showed significant moderate negative correlations with mental and physical health. Statistically significant differences were found between age, gender, nationality, education, monthly income and caregiving stress or DUKE Health Profile scores. Conclusion: Caregiving stress affects family caregivers’ mental and physical health. Such stress con disrupts the caregiving performance of the family caregivers. Among all participants, caregiving stress, caregivers’ mental and physical health were associated with each other. Identifying the sources of caregiving stress among the family caregivers of adult patients with cancer can help determine the main elements in a crisis of patient care and assist oncology nurses in providing support and services for those caregivers to meet their needs. Nursing Implications: The knowledge gained from this study can be useful in improving oncology nurses' understanding of caregiving stress and its impact on family caregivers' health. Educational strategies/interventions programs in Saudi hospitals may be required to reduce caregiving stress levels and improve health and wellbeing among family caregivers of adult patients with cancer. Longitudinal studies are also needed to test for moderators and mediators of the relationships of caregiver stressors and health problems. Keywords: caregiving stress, family caregivers, mental health, physical health, adult patients with cancer,
