Abstract
:
This study reports the occurrence of microplastic residues in 40 submerged nearshore sediment samples and the gastrointestinal contents of 142 fish samples from a specimen of a six different local fish species collected from Saudi Arabian coast of the Red Sea. Microplastics were detected in all sediment samples with levels ranging from 1 to 36 particles/300 g wet sediments. Four classes of microplastic particles in sediments visualized under the microscope include fragments, granules, foams, and fibers. Microplastics of different forms and sizes were detected in 53 % of the 142 fish from 6 species at a concentration ranging from 1 to 4 microplastic particle per individual. Polyester, polyethylene, and acrylic are the dominant polymer-types according to FTIR analysis. The results of this study emphasize that microplastic pollution represents an emerging threat to the marine environment of the Red Sea. The lengths of fibers detected in fish and sediment range from 133 µm to 3017 µm width. FT-IR analysis shows that all detected fibers were made of polyester. The here obtained results could be relevant and implemented in future studies to provide an accurate overview of microplastic distribution in the marine environment of the Red Sea.
