Abstract
:
This research examines the views of female teachers of English to foundation year students regarding the curriculum their institution implements and their involvement with it and its design. The context is an English language institution of a government university in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that teaches English as a mandatory course to foundation year students in a semester-based curriculum. The curriculum of the institution is self-made and does not use any official, unified books or sources; instead, it uses materials collected by a committee of specialists and teachers following a pre-designed programme that includes pacing guides and objectives. The research implements a mixed methods approach to ensure deeper comprehension of the issue through a self- designed questionnaire administered to 63 teachers and a semi-structured focus group interview with six teachers. The findings indicate that the respondents had mixed opinions about the current curriculum; they complimented its flexible and creativity-inducing nature but criticised its overwhelming vocabulary and reading material and the insufficient listening material. Moreover, the participants reported a lack of involvement with the curriculum and its design, with the exception of selecting supplementary material due to the nature of the curriculum, which allows teachers to substitute the primary material with more suitable options and add supporting material as they wish. In addition, the participants asserted that they would like to be involved in making decisions regarding the curriculum through questionnaires and other mediums that would allow them to effectively voice their opinions, feedback and suggestions. Key words: Curriculum development, voice, decision-making, teachers, empowerment.
