Abstract : Background: Sleep disorders estimated to affect millions of people worldwide. Few studies have targeted the Saudi population and revealed similar results. These facts therefore, raise the need for further studies in this regard in all population overall. The prevalence is very high among medical students. This kind of study will be interested subject for public and medical students with easy accessibility and feasibility. Objectives: This study was conducted aiming to screen males and females medical students who study at King Abdulaziz University for sleep disorders and estimate the prevalence of the most common ones, considering the differences between grades, genders and students’ academic performance. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in Jeddah, KSA- medical college, King Abdulaziz University KAU between February-May 2017 among 618 participants targeting medical student. Sociodemographic characteristics and other risk factors were collected beside validated Questionnaire (SLEEP-50). Results: The most prevalent disorders estimated to be Narcolepsy 72.64%, Restless leg syndrome RLS 39.29% and Obstructive Sleep Apnea OSA 26.81%. Narcolepsy and OSA were prevalent among seniors while Insomnia was prevalent among juniors significantly (P˂0.05). 69.42% of students with RLS and 58.97% of those with narcolepsy were males (P˂0.001). Hypersomnia and Affective sleep disorders tend to affects females more. The ability to have All screened sleep disorders was associated with higher GPA. Regression model predictors of all sleep disorders are gender and grade level. Conclusion: The current study showed a high prevalence of overall sleep disorders across medical students. Proper intervention is needed by medical faculties to help in minimizing the magnitude of the problem.
