Abstract : Background: Vitamin D is important for bone health, and vitamin D deficiency may contribute to other disorders (e.g., autoimmune, infections, cancer, degenerative, diabetic, and vascular). Enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs have been particularly implicated for osteoporosis risk given their effects on vitamin D. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency, deficiency and the factors influencing them among the adult epileptic patients attending King Fahd neurology outpatient clinic. Methods: 297 patients, 18+ years were enrolled in an observational cross-sectional study of consecutive adult epilepsy patients at King Fahd Hospital in 2017. Vitamin D 25-OH levels were categorized as deficiency (<10ng/ml), Insufficiency (<30ng/ml), or normal (≥30ng/ml). Antiepileptic drugs were categorized based on their enzyme inducing properties. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed. Results: Among adult epileptic patients; 87.88% were between 18 – 50 years of age, 55.56% were females, 58.92% were married, 65.66% were highly educated, 46.80% earned monthly less than 5,000 SR, 64.65% were either smokers or ex-smokers and almost all the sample 93.60% were Saudi patients. Nearly quarter of adult epileptic patients experienced vitamin D insufficiency while two thirds had deficiency. Multiple linear regression models for predictors of vitamin D insufficiency reported that; antiepileptic drug category, ploytherapy, and smoking status were significantly associated with vitamin D level (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency is common in patients with epilepsy on antiepileptic drugs. Monitoring of vitamin D should be considered as part of the routine management of patients with epilepsy.
