Objective: The present study was carried out to investigate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of Rosemary (RE) water extract in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Material and Methods: Male albino rats (n=25) weighing (250-300 g) were divided into two main groups. First group: negative control (n=5) fed standard diet, and second group: diabetic rats (n=20), which divided equally to four subgroups (5 rats/ group) as follows: diabetic untreated rats (positive control), diabetic rats treated with RE water extract at three deferent doses (200, 400, and 600 mg ⁄kg b. wt.). Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitonial injection of STZ (45 mg/kg b. wt.). At the end of experiments, rats were fasting overnight for 12 hours and fasting blood samples collected to make biochemical analysis. Moreover, pancreas removed for histopathological examination. Results: The results showed that the STZ-induced diabetic group exhibited hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, reduced in insulin and high density lipoprotein cholesterol level, when compared with control negative group. Treatment with RE water extract (200, 400, and 600 mg /kg b. wt.) reported improvement in biological evaluation, glucose, insulin, lipid profile when compared with untreated diabetic group. The improvement was higher as the dose increases. Histopathological investigation of pancreatic tissues of diabetic rats represented the presence of sever changes, meanwhile treatment overcome this changes, the majority of the cells tend to be normal especially in the high dose. Conclusion: The result of this experiment study demonstrates that the RE water extract possesses significant reduction in hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic effect in diabetic rats. Therefore, the study recommended using RE with meals to improve blood glucose level and lipid profile caused by diabetes.
