:
Pathogenic bacteria remain a major health problem because they are responsible for causing a large number of diseases. Their treatments with antibiotics lead to bacterial resistance and eliminate of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Six plants, used traditionally as medicine and as food additive, were extracted with methanol. The used plants were Allium sativum, Ocimum basilicum, Syzygium aromaticum, Laurus nobilus, Punica granatum and Pimpinella anisum. The plant extracts were screened for their inhibitory effects on four pathogenic bacteria and two genera of gut microbiota. It was shown that all plant extracts was effected on pathogenic bacteria, while gut microbiota was affected only by Syzygium aromaticum and Punica granatum. The MIC of the methanolic extracts of the used plants ranged from 3.1 to 250 μg/ml. O. basilicum leaf, S. aromaticum and P. granatum peels were toxic on Artimia salina as test organism. The cells of K. pneumonia and E. coli were treated with S. aromaticum and A. sativum, were examined using scanning electron microscope, it was observed that the treated cells were damaged. Additionally, only P. anisum was increased the cell count of Bifidobacterium likewise L. nobilus was increased the growth of Lactobacillus by studying the growth curve of gut microbiota. In conclusion, some plant extracts can be used to enhance gut flora.
