Grain size analysis indicated the dominance of sand. In addition the sand fraction is usually composed of chemically minerals like quarts, feldspar and carbonate. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) shows weak positive correlation with mud (fine particles <63µm) due to mud is minor component of sediments examined. Element Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn shows a positive correlation with gravel fraction. This indicates that large fraction of land-derived materials are found in coarse fraction (gravel) of the sediment examined. Moreover sand is negatively correlated with heavy metals. This indicates that sand is not associated with trace element.
Inter-element relationship shows that the weak negative correlation between Fe with Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cu and Cr (R ≥ 0.3) is probably related to the fact is all these elements are bound to the structural lattice of minerals (the detrital or residual fraction). This fraction is not dissolved by our chemical dissolution methods (aquaria). The strong positive correlation between Mn with the Ni, Pb, Zn, Cr and Cu is indicating that significant fraction of all these elements are held in the mobile fraction of the sediments examined (i.e. released from the dissolved fraction). The negative correlation between CaCO3 and LOI with Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cu and Cr indicate that these elements are not associated with CaCO3 and LOI materials of the sediments examined.
The average concentration of metals in sediments occurs in the following order Fe 3477.71 µg/g > Mn 188.41 µg/g > Zn 72.97 µg/g > Cu 27.95 µg/g > Cr 23.06 > Ni 12.88 µg/g > Pb 12.18 µg/g.
The average Contamination Factor (CF) value for Zn, N, Cu, Mn, Cr and Fe can be included in moderate contamination. In addition, the average PLI values from Jeddah coast can be described as non-polluted. |
