Abstract
:
Pastoral nomadism has universally experienced radical changes since the start of this century. These changes occurred as a result of certain economic and social transformations within the countries inhabited by groups of pastoral nomads. This transformation took place in the case of Saudi Arabia as a result of the rise of a modern stale and the discovery of oil. Both of these factors have directly and indirectly affected the economic and social life of the pastoral nomads. the Bedouins. in the country in general. And this effect was accentuated by the drought which afflicted the pastoral economy of the country in the early years of the 1950's. These factors led many Bedouins either to sedentarize or to take jobs in non-pastoral nomadic activities. This second alternative has necessitated a series of changes which finally led many Bedouins to revert to a semi-sedentary mode ,of life. The author endeavored in this paper to analyze the causes and processes as well as the ramifications of the change to a semi-sedentary mode of life. This analysis has been done on the national level of Saudi Arabia in general and then on the local scale of al-Taysiyah area in Hail Governorate. in particular. The human and environmental basis for pastoral nomadism has been discussed in detail as a framework for this analysis. This discussion has also been employed by the author to provide an understanding of the factors which contributed to the success of pastoral nomadism in the past and the success potentials of semi-sedentary mode of life at the present time. The author has provided at the end of this paper an investigation of the economic, environmental and social impact of semi-sedentary mode of life in the study area
