Abstract
:
In the last forty years drastic changes took place in Saudi Arabia, the high standard of living created pronounce effect where the cities increased in numbers and size. Ar Riyadh-al Kharj area is a clear example, the population rose by many folds and their daily life style produced large quantities of municipal waste and the waste type poses a greater threat to the environment. The city limit passed beyond the location of the present landfill in Ar Riyadh and there is an urgent need to search for a new landfill site that satisfies several requirements to assure the environment safety. A thorough site search and investigation that takes into account the geology, the geomorphology, hydrogeology, and geotechnical conditions of the area was carried out around the capital within 70 km radius from Ar Riyadh center. The essence is to select several potential sites among which the best one will be chosen. Although the search area is huge but the sites suitability was limited, land ownership among other factors played a major role. Five potential sites were found about 65 km east of Ar Riyadh. The potential sites were compared based on their geological conditions and soil and rock engineering properties. The best site is environmentally safe, easily accessible, and large enough to serve Ar Riyadh and al Kharj for more than 30 years.
