Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity. It can be treated by psychiatric medication (Prozac) but with adverse effects .It is possible that the strategic provision of certain natural products will be therapeutic in preventing or treating many psychiatric and emotional disorder.The purpose of this study was comparing between the biotoxic action of Prozac and barley grains on skeletal muscle of depressed mice model , as barley has been referred in Arabian traditional medicine for the treatment of depression. Forty adult male Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus) weighting (25 ± 5 g.) assigned into four main groups : –ve control group with normal social environment, + ve control group (socially isolated), Prozac-group (socially isolated) received an intraperitoneal injection (0.06 mg Prozac / mouse / day ) and Barely -group (socially isolated) supplemented with barley grains instead the usual food (5 g./ mouse /day ) for 30 days. Comparative studies included behavioral, mortality, body weight, biochemical , histopatholgical and cytological changes were recorded. In +ve control-group myofibrils with irregular thick sarcolemma, faintly defined striation , peripheral nerve with small accessory ending, decrease in sarcomere length , accumulation of huge mitochondria and nerve terminals devoided of mitochondria with electron-dense synaptic vesicles were noticed .It was assessed tissue and organelles protected situation in the presence of Barely supplementation . Barley had effective role in lowering both weight , glucose , creatine kinase ,total cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase and increase level of creatinine.Also, side motor nerve trunk and neuromuscular junction demonstrating normative appearance .In the other hand, Prozac- group suffered from myofibrils with variation in size, increased collagen deposition, degenerated axon terminal which failed to reach the sub neural apparatus, autolysis of myofilaments, the incidence of mitochondrial cristolysis , diminished neuromuscular junction and peripheral myelinated axons with signs of demyelination . From the results obtained in this work, it was concluded that Barely reduce risk factors and led to more healthy life. |
