Abstract
:
The poultry industry may face limitation on the supply and disposal of bedding material in the future. Partial litter reuse has been adopted by a number of broiler meat chicken producers. Beside that the broiler industry is under increasing pressure to minimize resource consumption and waste production. Litter type utilized is largely dependent upon local availability of the material and location of the farm. Unfortunately, the availability of shavings the traditional source of bedding materials has steadily decreased due to the competition for its use from other industries and use as energy source. The objective of this research was to evaluate the use of old waste papers as a substitute litter source to the conventional wood shavings or partial reuse after lime addition to the bedding materials. The effect of bedding materials on broiler performance, carcass traits, lymphoid gonads, plasma and liver constituents and chemical and physical composition of litter were measured. In conclusion, the results showed that the performance, mortality, carcass parameters, lymphoid organs and physical condition of broiler litter is slightly better for broiler rearing on old newspapers as a bedding material than the other traditional materials. Further, research is needed to study the recent advances in broiler litter utilization under arid land agriculture conditions.
