Abstract
:
This study was designed to investigate the modulation of cardiovascular autonomic function in obese persons in response to short-term isometric skeletal muscle contraction and to explore autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions in obesity by monitoring of heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: Fifty male non-smoker subjects, aged 19-23 years (mean=20.46±1.27), were selected from among the medical students of King Abdul-Aziz University (KAAU) in Saudi Arabia Kingdom, CONCLUSIONS: Obesity, one of the risk factors for health, can modulate cardiac autonomic activity explaining, at least partially, the mechanism by which obesity increases cardiac mortality and can be coped with by diagnosing and treating autonomic dysfunction especially sympathetic nervous system which is a major determinant of energy expenditure.
