Abstract |

Previous researches discussed the effect of light and shadow on the form (three-dimensional), others discussed the usage of shadow and light in photography and two-dimensional arts, but this research is concerned with studying the sculptural form and its shadow on the two-dimensional surfaces or on the backgrounds considering them togeter as one whole work.
This has been done through an introduction that included the research background, problem, aims, the assumptions and its method (chapter I). then a theoretical study for the relation between light and shadow as they have been mentioned in the Holly Qura’an as a grace from Allah for the believers in life and a reward in the hereafter, and also as a punishment in the hell (chapter II).
The theoretical study also discussed light and shadow throughout history, as it is evident in culture of Sab’a, Pharaohs, the Mesopotamia, the Islamic and Christian cultures, and modern age culture (chapter III).
The theoretical study also discussed the light on the physical side and its art usages and concentrated on shadows, its definition, its usage in art, the factors that affect it and the colors of shadows, then
the light and shadows and their symbolism the psychological effect
of shadow and light on man, then consequently on the art creator in his apprehension for aims achieved by shadows in arts, the source of light natural or artificial, its role in the visual illusion and in achieving the fourth-dimension, and its role on conceiving and tasting the sculptural work(Chapters III,IV, V, VI).
Chapters VII and VIII were about two kinds of experiment done by the student to make a test on the effect of changing the factors of shadows falling on the objects (chapter VII) and personal experiments represented in nine sculptural works of iron scraps and juncks divided into four experiments in which the light falling on bodies was chosen. The study also contains a test for the effect of the mechanic accompanied with the resulting shadow. The results and pictures of works have been recorded (chapter VIII).
The research also included a detailed annex of nine tables register the whole experiments of chapter VII. |
