Abstract
:
This research addresses the impacts, effects and environmental consequences in both spatial and temporal components over a specific period and within a defined area resulting from the construction and operation of two dams with different characteristics in the Western Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, namely: Fatima Dam in Makkah region and Ikrema Dam in Taif region. Environmental parameters affected by the dams were identified, field and laboratory investigations were conducted, and their impacts were assessed. Detrimental impacts were found to have resulted from: ? Siltation of lakes and loss of routine silt deposits on agricultural lands ? Changes in permeability of soil. ? Changes in quality of water. ? Public health concerns related to transmission of water born diseases. ? Destruction of irrigation galleries. ? Socio-econornic effects resulting from migration of local residents to nearby cities. Systematic guidelines consisting of five major phases and eleven steps have been developed for the purpose of Environmental Impact Studies to fit the local needs for planning all public water projects, in general and dam projects in particular, and to provide mitigation measures to alleviate the impacts of such projects. In view of the grave significance of the effects as mentioned above, the research has recommended careful social, economic and environmental evaluation of all proposed dam projects prior to their construction as a long term solution, and to revise operation and maintenance programs of existing projects as a short term solution to mitigate identified impacts.
