Abstract
:
Modem architecture in Saudi Arabia is often criticized in the local press and in specialized journals and books. The main criticism centers on the contention that: 1) Modern architecture is an alien style, which is antithetic to “Islamic Architecture”, 2) Modem architecture does not fit the hot desert environment of Saudi Arabia, and 3) Modern architecture has led to the disappearance of local architecture style and national architectural identity. This article deals with these criticisms and argues that the spread of modern architecture is only one aspect of the transition from rural/agricultural society to an urban/industrial one. The article discusses also the methods used by some architects to integrate traditional architecture with modem architects. Finally, the author argues that introducing municipal laws to force architects to use traditional motifs in their designs, as some critics advocate, would seriously curtail artistic creativity and would result in a dull architectural environment.
