Abstract
:
Laboratories are basic elements in the process of university education in science and engineering disciplines in addition to its role as a basic tool for research work. This paper reviews the basic elements of the maintenance process of scientific equipment in these laboratories. These elements are: The faculty member who supervises the laboratories; the laboratory technician responsible for equipment operation and periodical maintenance; the maintenance technician responsible for faults diagnosis; the qualified skilled technician responsible for repairing and the experienced technician in measurements and calibration. The paper also reviews the major causes of equipment breakdown; it equally shows the automatic computerized fault diagnosis and it also describes the scientific methods that should be followed in achieving the maintenance operations. Finally, this paper shows the case study of the Maintenance Centre in (K.A. U.), which was established to fulfill the following objectives: 1 - Setting-up a technical scientific system for all maintenance operations. 2 - Setting-up a library for manual maintenance. 3 - Developing a computerized data bank for maintenance operations. 4 - Setting-up a reliable system for spare parts. 5 - Developing a data bank to cover the laboratories equipment in the University and their operational status. 6 - Periodical enhancing and upgrading knowledge for laboratory users. The paper argues that the centre has fully achieved its objective technically and financially.
