Abstract
:
wave information, despite the fact that such information is very essential for both safety and economical purposes. In this context Jeddah, the most rapidly growing Saudi city on the Red Sea, is not much different. Two wave gauges were deployed to collect detailed wave measurements at Jeddah near-shore region during summer months of the years 2005 and 2006. These measurements constitute the first long-term record ever collected in the region. Although dominated by typically mild wave conditions during the summer season, incidents of energetic wave field that reached nearly 2 meter in height have been observed. The numerical wave model SWAN was used to simulate observed wave conditions. SWAN computed wave conditions showed good agreement with the observed conditions at the two deployment locations. The numerical modeling of the wave conditions also allowed the investigation of the significance of some of the physical mechanisms that can be associated with the wave generation and propagation in the region. The investigation showed that wave breaking and whitecapping are the most significant physical mechanisms affecting the observed wave field in Jeddah near-shore region. Saudi coastal areas along the Red Sea are extremely lacking in terms of detailed
