Abstract
:
The present study investigates the extent and nature of information sharing in the field of Islamic finance through use of the electronic media. Since the Internet plays a growing role in information-sharing, the study focuses on the web sites relating to the Islamic financial services industry. It undertakes an analysis of websites of almost all major Islamic financial institutions in terms of their contents, user-friendliness and functionality. The potential of the Internet for Islamic financial institutions is also examined from the standpoint of serving as a vehicle of conducting transactions, as a tool for improving customer relationship and as a channel for educating Shariah-compliant finance. Results reveal growing use of the Internet as a vehicle of information-sharing and conducting transactions. While the potential of the Internet appears to be grossly underutilized from the standpoint of customer relationship management, Islamic financial institutions seem to perform better in the matter of educating the market about nuances of Shariah-compliant finance through the Internet. In addition to the websites of Islamic financial institutions, the study also reviews a couple of existing on-line databases catering to Islamic finance sector to identify gaps in meeting the informational needs of the Islamic finance community in general and researcher community in particular. As a final step the study designs and develops the prototype of a one-stop data source that aims to plug in the existing gaps in information-sharing. Though the databank is accessible to bankers, financial professionals and other visitors as well, it is targeted primarily at the community of researchers and seeks to present information in a processed format.
